We held this second EGM to enable us to have the widest possible consultation regarding the future of the Society.
What follows is a narrative account of views expressed during our discussion about the Society’s future.
Stephen Dutfield opened the meeting by explaining how his employment situation had changed quite unexpectedly over the last few months, leaving him unable to give the time he had previously expected to be able to devote to Society business.
SD explained that getting commitment from speakers for our meetings was something he had found particularly difficult. The point that we really do need a ‘full time’ chairperson and secretary was made quite forcefully. However, no names were put forward, and there were no direct offers to take on these roles.
Steven Tyrer commented that securing speakers for meetings was something he did not find taxing, and wondered if he could undertake this task for next year. We understand from James Nye, that the AHS is very keen for Wales and Marches Horological Society to continue to exist as a formal body.
Tony Panes indicated that he is prepared to continue with his role as treasurer of the Society. Brian Coles (currently acting as minute secretary) offered to act as secretary for one meeting a year, so that the Society can continue into next year.
It was suggested that a single meeting planned for 2023 should use St. Fagans as the venue, because of its quality and accessibility. (Reflecting on this as I write these notes,
I can confirm that I would hope to continue at this level of engagement for the next three years, as we try to increase our membership).
We resolved to hold our next meeting at St Fagans, in March or April 2023, avoiding proposed Six Nations fixture days in Cardiff. ST will arrange speakers and BC will book the venue and act as secretary.
The meeting closed at 12.15pm
Brian Coles
STOP PRESS – St Fagans has been booked for Saturday 1st April 2023, using Studio 3, the large upstairs room we have used previously, and we believe we have two speakers willing to visit us for the day. Please make a note in your diary!
